Hello
The summer has yet to really get going, a couple of false starts has delayed a lot of the new growth, hopefully
some warmth is on its way. Here are couple of projects which may get you warmed up.
Firstly: With the opening of the new Premier Inn there is a competition for local photographers
to catch the ‘Spirit of St Andrews’ and have their photograph as the centre piece of the new reception. All the
details are in the attached file. Please note the deadline for entries is the 15th of June.
Secondly: Eastacre a St Andrews based company specialising in building quality homes in St Andrews,
(their recent project is in West Burn Lane),would like to hold a photographic competition with a theme of ’Architecture
in St Andrews’ and are inviting members of the Society to capture a suitable entry around the above theme. There will
be cash prizes for the top three photographs. The winning entries will be displayed as part of their show house display
at West Burn Lane. There is no deadline for this as yet, I suggest you target the end of July.
All this and we have not even announced our ‘Summer Challenge’ yet!!
This is a fantastic opportunity to promote the Society, have fun in doing so with a little incentive to
boot.
Let’s get those shutters working hard.

STAPS President

The Royal Photographic Society
and The Open University have launched a unique online digital photography course that will bring together The RPS’s
160-year experience in photography and the Open University’s recognised expertise in delivering education online.
Digital Photography: Creating
and Sharing Better Images is a 10-week course designed to help people new to digital photography and those looking to
improve existing skills – and to see the world in a new way. It will develop participants’ technical and visual
skills through weekly practical assignments. Students will join a vibrant online community of their peers, to share,
comment and learn from each other’s work, and they will receive feedback from expert photographers on their final assessment.
The course has been designed
to give those completing it the skills needed to tackle The Royal Photographic Society’s Licentiate (LRPS) distinction
in photography.
The 10-week course will cost
£200 with participants working through The Open University’s award-winning online platform. There will be two presentations
each year, with the first in June and October 2015. Students who successfully complete the course will be entitled to an RPS
Certificate in Photography. It does not provide credit towards OU qualifications.

Andrews Photographic Society Prize winners 2015
TheThe 2014/
2015
season of the St Andrews Photographic Society drew to a close with the end of season prize giving. Stan
Farrow scored a hat trick by winning the colour print, mono print, and digital images categories. Nicola Shepherd was 2nd and John McNairn was 3rd
in the colour print category; Audrey Peddie was 2nd and Frank Riddell was 3rd
in the mono print; and Chris Reekie was 2nd and Frank Riddell was 3rd

Nov 14 - SPF DIGITAL CHAMPIONSHIP, STIRLING
Our first round marks were OK (......ish) but the second round marks were really not good at all. On this basis we weren't
in the list of top ten scoring clubs, so we didn't qualify for the Cup Competition. On this basis we were therefore put into
the Plate Competition for runners up. This was judged only on our third and final round scores. We took our best marks from
the first two rounds and selected new images from our image bank for the final round. This time we scored better, and gained
118 marks in total. We came second in the Plate competition, being beaten by Dingwall who had 119 marks (just one ahead) and
beating Edinburgh CC on 115 by three marks.
Dumfries
did very well in the Cup competition, coming very much ahead of Dundee who came second
In this
particular competition it was my impression that portraiture and landscapes did not do very well. Sports photography
did reasonably well, but wildlife (and bird photography in particular) did very well.
There were
three judges, each scoring out of 5 marks to give a potential top score of 15. It is unusual to give scores of less than 9,
but on this occasion there were several scores of 8 in the second round. Clubs were allowed a maximum of 25% of their images
to be wildlife, and there were a number of marks of 15 given for some excellent bird photography. Other scores of 15 went
to Stan (for "Two spoons and a strawberry" in the final round) as well as to Dundee and Dumfries.

Photographic Society gives back to the community.
Over the last 6
months Emily Noakes, Society treasurer, assisted by Caroline MacDonald, and

raffles and cake sales held at the Society regular meetings. The Society donated
£255.00 each to Home-Start East Fife, and the

visit families on a weekly basis offering support, friendship and practical
assistance. Joanna Roddam accepted
