LANDSCAPE WITHIN
by David Ward
ISBN 1 902538 34 X
Published by Argentum in softback at £20

An interesting guide to improving landscape photography techniques. It doesn't dwell too much on camera techniques, but rather on developing a vision of what makes a good image. Writing is a bit flowery in places, but it is worth a read.

A good introduction to the craft of converting digital files to monochrome prints. As with other books by the same author, there are lots of short lessons, and it covers the subject well, but not in too much detail in any particular area.

Lee Miller was one of the foremost photojournalists of the Second World War. Originally a Vogue model, she trained as a photographer with Man Ray. She entered Europe with the American forces after D-Day and documented the first use of napalm at St Malo and the liberation of the death camps. Some very moving photography backed up by her diaries.

This book sits on my bookshelf and is rarely consulted. However when it is needed it provides some valuable and informative instruction.

Slightly more expensive, but well worth the cost. Contains a large selection of Joe Cornish's superb photography with descriptions of why and how the photographs were taken.

STILL LIFE AND SPECIAL EFFECTS PHOTOGRAPHY
by Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz
ISBN 978 2 940361 30 4
Pubished in softback by Rotovision at £16.99

An interesting guide to creative still life photography, giving photographs and describing how they were taken. Much applies to commercial photography, and the use of equipment beyond the means of most amateurs. Neverthless it makes good reading, provides ideas, and many of the techniques can be adapted to table-top home photography.

PHOTO PROJECTS
by
Chris Dickie
ISBN 1 902538 44 7
Published in softback at £20 by Argentum

At the moment this book is never far from me, as I read and re-read it. It covers planning and publishing photographs in print and on the internet, and also covers the planning and marketing of an exhibition.

NIGHT AND LOW-LIGHT TECHNIQUES FOR DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
by Peter Cope
ISBN 1 58428 174 X
Pubished in softback at $34.95 (USA) by Amherst Media

An American book aimed at the difficult area of digital night photography. This book is good in parts, as it includes many techniques that are not unique to low-light photography. I found it slightly disappointing, but still like to dip into it from time-to-time.

OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHER MAGAZINE
(Not to be confused with the UK Outdoor Photography Magazine)

This is an American magazine, and I have subscribed to it for about 8 years. The articles are longer and make "meatier" reading than many similar UK magazines. Whllst the landscapes illustrated are from the USA and not Britain, the "how to photograph" articles are consistently aimed at the experienced photographer. British magazines have a smaller customer base and have to cater for beginners as well as the experienced.

A year's on-line subscription of 11 issues costs $29.97 (about £15) , and two years subscription costs $55.97 (about £27). This includes international postage. Try buying a British magazine that cheaply!

All the publications listed here are selected from my own bookshelves. If you are a member of St Andrews Photographic Society and would like to preview one of these books, please contact me and I'll bring it in on a club night.
